Derby Rules

  • All anglers must comply with ALL Maine State fishing laws and regulations.  This includes proper fishing licenses.  (http://www.eregulations.com/maine/fishing/)
  • The derby will be held on February 22, 2014.  The derby will be a rain or shine event with no rain date.  The only reason the derby will be cancelled will be for unsafe ice conditions.  All ticket sales are nonrefundable.
  • Two types of tickets will be sold.
    • 1) Grand Prize tickets
      • $30
      • Only Grand Prize ticket holders will qualify to win the grand prize.
      • Grand Prize tickets are also valid for regular derby prizes and door prizes.
      • Grand Prize ticket sales will be limited to 550, first come first serve.
    • 2) Regular Derby tickets
      • $10
      • Regular Derby tickets WILL NOT qualify for the Grand Prize.
      • Regular Derby ticket holders only qualify for regular derby prizes and door prizes.
      • There will be no limit on the number of regular derby tickets sold.
  • Ten fish will be specially tagged and released into Embden Pond several days before the derby.  One these fish will be the Grand Prize winning fish.
    • Each fish will have a uniquely numbered tag.
    • One of the ten tag numbers will be randomly drawn during the awards presentation of the derby.
    • Only the first three tagged fish to be registered at Derby Headquarters will eligible for the grand prize.
    • Catching one of the tagged fish does not guarantee the angler winning the grand prize.
    • If the grand prize is awarded the winner will be required to undergo a polygraph test which is required by SCA Promotions.  SCA Promotions is the insurance underwriter who is issuing the policy on the tagged fish.
  • Regular derby prizes will be cash prizes for the largest fish in each of three species (Salmon, Brook Trout and Togue).  There will be an Adults and a Kids Division.
  • The kids division will consist of children 0-12 years of age.  Children 13 years and older will fall into the adults division for awards.
  • Weight at the time of entry determines winners.
    • In case of a tie in weight, length shall be the determinate factor. If there is still a tie between weight and length the earliest entry will be the final tie breaker (First fish registered wins)
  • A valid fishing license AND a derby ticket must be shown to register a fish for weigh-in for both regular derby prizes and the Grand Prize.
  • Children who are not required by Maine State Law to possess a fishing license are required to have a parent/guardian, with a valid Maine Fishing License, accompany them when they register a fish.
  • The Grand Prize fish have to be caught and registered the day of the derby.
  • Use of sonar guns, metal detectors or other fish detector apparatus is prohibited & will result in disqualification.
  • When measured and weighed, the fish shall be free of ice and snow. Any visible hooks, tackle and bait are to be removed.  Derby officials reserve the right to hold or open any fish for inspection.
  • All fish will be judged in their normal/natural condition.
  • All fish will be marked to prevent duplicate weigh-ins. Anglers should notify staff at the weigh-in station of any possible intent to have a fish mounted.
  • The derby committee chairman will have the final say on any grievances or judgments.
  • Any attempt to cheat in any form or method will result in disqualification from the derby.
  • Derby participants are able to fish any body of water in Maine.  The Grand Prize fish will only be released into Embden Pond.  Any anglers wishing to register a fish for competition will have to bring their fish to the to the weigh-in station at Derby Headquarters. 
  • Derby Headquarters will be located at the Embden Pond public boat launch.  The boat launch is at the southern most point of Embden Pond.
  • The fish weighing station will be at Derby Headquarters.
  • The weigh-in station will be open from 9:00 am until 4:00 pm, February 22, 2014.
  • All fish must be registered prior to 4:00 pm according to the Official Derby Time Clock at Derby Headquarters.
    • If you are in line at 4:00 pm you will be weighed-in and eligible.
    • At 4:00 pm the line will be shut off and no one else will be allowed into the line.  NO EXCEPTIONS!
